Music Video Conventions

The genre influences the aspects of mise-en-scene alongside aspects of the shoot and edit

Narrative structure is influenced by genre and lyrics
  • can be linear/story
  • Preformance and performance back story
  • Montage narrative

Typical length of a music video is 2-4 minutes

Editing - The pace and beat of the music, along with the lyrics influences the speed and style of editing and effects. Usually music videos consist of very short takes and fast transitions

Camera work - Focus on the artist and alot of close ups

Kate Nash's -Foundations video uses 'stop motion' on items including toothbrushes and socks, this is used to create the illusion that the socks and toothbrushes are moving on their own, it is a quirky unconventional way of showing a very simple action. The video itself in relation to the song has a linear narrative which shall also be used in our 'Sail Away' video, the use of using stop motion to intertwine the socks together and do the same with the toothbrushes creates a metaphor reflecting the relationship described between kate nash and the love interest in her song, this makes it very quirky, but the whole video isn't taken over by this stop motion technique, snippets are used to give variation to the video keeping it fresh and lively, therefore this technique could also be a good idea to use in the 'sail away' video to keep the audiences interest maintained and add variation to the video.
